Asbestos – from wonder material to problem case
For decades, the hazardous mineral asbestos was used in various compositions as a building material but now it is proving to be a huge disposal problem.
Although it hasn´t been used anywhere in Europe for some years, and is no longer allowed to be marketed, in many places Asbestos can still be found in older buildings. This is because of Asbestos´ mutiple technical applications, its fire and acid resistance, as well as its other excellent material properties. For more detailed information, see http://www.asbest.lu.
Prevent health risks
n its construction form, the asbestos fibers are usually bonded. However, through weathering, renovation and demolition work, fibers can be released. Even during small renovations – for example, drilling a hole or breaking asbestos insulating board – asbestos can be inhaled.
Even in small amounts, fine asbestos dust represent a big health risk, so only specialized companies should be used in this work and, preferably, the entire building cleared of asbestos. This is the only way that it can be ensured that future residents and tradespeople are not at risk.
